Montacute Station operated from 1882 to 1964. It was a late addition to the Bristol and Exeter Railway line from Taunton through Durston, Langport and Martock, to Pen Mill station in Yeovil. The Great Western Railway Company took the line over in 1876. Along with many of the UK's stations, Montacute was closed in 1964 as part of Beeching's 'reshaping' of the Railway network. The present day A3088 road from Cartgate roundabout on the A303 was built around 1984. It runs past Montacute along the route of the old railway until it reaches Bunford Lane roundabout by Westland's (now Leonardo's) airfield in Yeovil.
Thanks to AS for pointing out that part of Montacute Railway Station lives on, with some of its 1930's precast concrete sections being re-used at the Great Western Railway's station 'Doniford Halt', on the West Somerset coast. He also tells me that on the final day when passenger trains stopped at Montacute, an additional carriage was added to take an outing from Montacute Baptist Church for a daytrip to Weymouth.
Phil Lilley has assembled photos and video footage to create a brilliant YouTube video of the history of this once-busy stop:
